<< back to Curriculum Areas

At Park Community Academy we place great emphasis on equipping our learners with all the necessary skills that are needed to function effectively in our technologically led society. Student’s learn all the core elements of Computing and in addition pupils gain external qualifications in the subject. Pupils begin their Entry Level Accreditation in Year 10 which carries on into Year 11.

We have a Computer suite that is equipped with 16 dual boot computers and we have a computing technician working full time to offer support.

Each classroom has a computer connected to a large interactive whiteboard. The two lower primary classes also have an additional computer set up solely for the use of the students. These have age appropriate chunky keyboards and an easy to use mouse. We have two portable trolleys, each with 13 Apple Mac laptops, which utilise wireless internet, network and printing technology. Other examples of IT resources include digital voice recorders, talking tins and postcards and ‘Bee Bots’. There is also an interactive table set up for the Upper Primary pupils to use which has a range of apps on ready to support their learning.

Each Key Stage has a set of 15 iPads which are used to support all areas of the curriculum and give each pupil personal access to Computing without being in the designated computing suite. We also have an apple TV unit set up in each room which allows the teacher to show the pupils on the interactive whiteboard what is on the iPad without the need for wires. This also allows students to participate from their own seats in a variety of interactive activities.

Computing is taught as a discreet subject whereby learners acquire new skills, are formally assessed, can gain accreditation and regularly update their knowledge.  In addition, Computing is delivered on a cross curricular basis and is used as a tool which enhances the learning process across all areas of the curriculum.

The school run a Digital Champions program which allows a group of pupils who have a particular interest in Computing to meet, try out new equipment and develop their skills. They then have the opportunity to share these skills with other students within the school.

Key Stage 1 Computing

The pupils in Key Stage 1 are taught from the Early Learning Goals and units from the iCompute scheme of work are used and adapted to teach them key computing skills.

Key Stage 2 and 3 Computing

We have had a bespoke scheme of work written especially for our Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils which takes into account each key stage’s rolling programmes along with the hardware and software available throughout the school. E-safety units are also included which will be regularly covered throughout each year. By following this program, the staff will ensure that all areas of the computing curriculum will be covered and the key skills built upon.

Key Stage 5 Computing

KS5 will be following computing via 2 pathways. They will either be doing an AQA functional skills Qualifications in ICT  covering the basics of using IT and how to stay safe, or BCS ECDL qualification in which students will complete mandatory units of study including 'Improving productivity using IT and IT fundamentals, using the internet and email and IT security for users accompanied by optional units if appropriate for additional credits.
